IBM announced that it has opened an Energy & Utilities Solutions Lab in Beijing, China.

IBM (News - Alert) proposes to combine advanced analytics skills, industry-specific offerings and best practices to make energy and utility networks safer, more efficient and smarter.

The Lab will develop industry-specific solutions based on the energy and utilities industry. The E& U Solutions Lab will be manned by a dedicated team of developers, IT architects and experts and will be housed in the IBM China Development Labs. The team will work in tandem with partners, utilities and experts in IBM Research Labs and Development Labs in China and other places, said official sources.

IBM also announced several energy industry-specific solutions that will enable utility companies to enhance energy delivery and performance by providing network automation and efficiency.

China’s energy demand is expected to grow at the rate of 5.5 percent per year through 2020. This new initiative by IBM is expected to cater to this demand and provide the necessary smart grid way of energy delivery and help in the development of clean energy.

The Chinese government has also earmarked a significant investment in the improvement of existing grids and for the development of alternative energy projects using solar and wind energy.

“As part of our growth strategy, we strive to become a key part of China's energy and utilities ecosystem, working with the Chinese government, utility companies, solution providers and business partners,” said Matt Wang, vice president, China Development Labs for IBM, in a press release. “Our strategic collaboration with China to develop utility solutions that meet the unique energy demands in China will benefit the industry not only here but also countries around the world.”

IBM has already started working with the China Electric Power Research Institute, a subsidiary of State Grid Corporation of China or SGCC to develop an optimized distribution network planning platform to support decision-making for energy savings, loss reduction and network reliability improvement. The platform is currently being used by a power company under SGCC as a pilot scheme, added IBM sources.

IBM plans to conduct more projects in the E&U Solutions Lab including Wide Area Grid Monitor and Alert or WAGMA system developed on IBM WebSphere MQ Low Latency Messaging and IBM DB2 software products. This will help improve the safe and stable operation for wide area power grid.

Renewable Energy Monitoring and Power Grid Integration is another project which will help monitor and control distributed wind and solar energy in a centralized way. This solution was developed on IBM software products including ILOG, Cognos (News - Alert) and WebSphere ESB and can forecast the power output.

Another project, the Intelligent Plant Lifecycle Management for Nuclear Energy helps improve efficiency during the whole lifecycle of a nuclear plant, from the construction phase to the operational phase.
