Earth911.com Talks Most Recycled Products in '09: Report

Everyone tries to recycle right? I tend to think – and hope – so. Whether it be my can of Diet Coke, or extra papers lying around my house, I make my best efforts to ensure that all re-usable products find a home in the recycle bins.

But, what exactly do other people recycle? According to Earth911.com’s 2009 Annual Recycling Report, lots of different – and extremely varied – items.

What do you think topped the list?

Rounding the top 10 was the lovely technology gadget I am using to compose this story – computers.

“Electronics have always been popular searches on Earth911.com, but with the increased attention these devices have received, this past year was our highest yet,” said Corey Lambrecht, president of Earth911. “Also, overall recycling searches increased 12 percent over 2008, as consumers want to know more about how to dispose of these items.”

From personal experience, I know that when TMC (News - Alert) moved recently from its old headquarters to its new digs, there was a great deal of computers that we had to ship out – and not in the garbage – but recycled as a means for possible parts or future use to someone else.

In addition to computers, batteries, televisions, paint and aluminum cans (see, told you my Diet Coke recycle bins went to good use!) rounded out the top five recycle items.

Following my good old soda were the remaining items in the top 10:

·         Used Motor Oil
·         CFLs
·         Glass
·         Fluorescent Lamps
·         Christmas Trees

Earth911.com also discovered additional insights into recycling and consumer behavior. For example, 40 percent of respondents to a poll conducted on the Earth911.com homepage noted that when they buy a product, the “green” factor they are most concerned about is its recyclability. Also, 35 percent of Earth911 readers responded that their main challenge to adopting more green practices is money.

As a provider of the nation’s leasing local recycling and disposal directory, Earth911.com’s database of over 117,000 locations helps people find what’s available to them right in their town. In addition, the organization distributes lists across multimedia platforms for the easiest access possible, as no cost to the customer.
