Verizon (News - Alert) Communications Inc,a New York headquartered company engaged in providing wire line and wireless services, has reportedly received the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or “LEED,” Silver certification for its operations center in Basking Ridge , N.J. for its environmentally friendly and energy efficient design.

The Verizon operation center comprising an area of 1.4 million square foot has installed features to make the building energy efficient.

“The efficient management of the Verizon operations center is an extension of the company's commitment to the environment, but it's also an example of our focus on implementing sensible business practices and reducing energy consumption,” Tanya Penny, vice president of real estate for Verizon, said.

For the purpose of monitoring heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems, Verizon installed temperature sensors and management systems. The lighting facility requirements and schedules and tracking of the schedules are also controlled by the sensors. For the purpose of saving energy spent on heating and cooling the company fitted energy effective light-emitting diodes and fluorescent T-5 type of lights in the building.

The Energy Star rating was awarded to Verizon operation center after it having qualified and placed among the top 25 percent of the energy efficient facilities across the United States.

As a commercial building, Verizon used 40 percent less energy in comparison with standard buildings and took care to release 35 percent less CO2. Currently, Verizon manages 46 Energy Star-rated services including its retail stores in the United States.

Rick Fedrizzi, president, CEO and founding chair of the U.S. Green Building Council, said that Verizon's LEED certification demonstrates tremendous green building leadership.

“As the newest member of the LEED family of green buildings, the Verizon operations center is an important addition to the growing strength of the green building movement,” Fedrizzi added.

Verizon is continuously engaged in finding ways to remain energy efficient and maintains one of the largest solar energy sites to produce electrical energy. The average CO2 emission of the company is rated nine times below the U.S. national average.

Prior to achieving LEED certification for the Verizon Operation Center, the center was awarded U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's prestigious Energy Star rating for energy efficiency and environmental protection.
