European Green City Index based on the Economist Intelligence Unit study which analyzed 30 cities in 30 European countries that are playing a leading role in climate protection.
Copenhagen topped the list followed by Stockholm, Oslo, Vienna and Amsterdam. London was ranked 11th in the study.
Based on a unique study of the environmental sustainability of the cities, the study analyzed the achievements of the cities and objectives in environmental and climate protection.
The evaluation was based on eight categories such as CO2 emissions, energy, buildings, transportation, water, air quality, waste and land use and environmental governance.
“We support the cities’ efforts to achieve efficient climate protection by providing them with comprehensive standardized data,” said Dr. Reinhold Achatz, head of Corporate Research and Technologies, the central research unit of Siemens AG (

James Watson, managing editor at the Economist Intelligence Unit and the editor of the study revealed that analysis indicates European cities are leaders in environmental performance.
Oslo, for example, emits only 2.5 tons of CO2 per capita and per year, less than the EU average of 8.5 tons.
“A key element of the study is the comparability of the results from each city - within both the individual categories and in the overall evaluation,” Watson said.
Siemens’ environmental portfolio makes it an ideal partner for the implementation of climate-friendly infrastructure solutions.
