Oberthur Technologies Announces Successful Deployment of Eco-Friendly SIM Card

Oberthur Technologies, a provider of smart card solutions, has announced the successful deployment of EcoSIM.

EcoSIM is touted as the first patented eco-friendly SIM card in the market, and had a soft launch earlier this year. Oberthur said that more than 10 million cards were delivered to mobile network operators worldwide.

The new SIM card is half the size of a classic SIM card. Company officials said it reduces the use of plastics by 50 percent. Additionally, the carbon-dioxide levels generated per card is reduced from 16g to 8g.

EcoSIM also reduces the carbon footprint for transport and overall waste through environmentally friendly packaging using the recycled paper and PEFC and FSC certified materials.

The SIM cards usually are produced on sheets of plastic using a credit card size format. However, thanks to the patented process of the company, it’s possible to manufacture two SIM cards on a single sheet of plastic instead of one.

“EcoSIM, demonstrates that innovation goes beyond technological advances and can help to reduce the environmental footprint for both our customers and end users. We are encouraged by the interest shown in an eco-friendly SIM card by our customers,” said Xavier Drilhon, managing director for Card Systems Division at Oberthur Technologies.

Earlier this month, BNP Paribas selected Oberthur Technologies to supply the Near Field Communications (NFC) Services Management Solution for an NFC project in Nice, France. Oberthur Technologies will manage the mobile payment service on behalf of BNP Paribas via an Over the Air (OTA) Platform.

Also this month, Oberthur Technologies and Todos teamed up to create a complementary range of services and products such as authentication devices and back-end servers to improve security, usability and trust for online e-shopping and e-banking users.
