Green Technology -Extreme Networks Now Shipping Greener, Efficient Version of Data Center Switch

Extreme Networks (News - Alert), a provider of converged Ethernet networks that support data, voice and video for enterprises and service providers, have remodeled their Summit X650 10GBASE-T data center switch to be more greener and power efficient so that the datacenters deploying them can save power by 30 percent.

According to company officials, the company’s Summit X650 series switch is a purpose-built Top-of-Rack switch designed for emerging 10 Gigabit Ethernet-enabled servers deployed in enterprise data centers. Summit X650 helps optimize new server deployments while providing a seamless migration path from existing Gigabit Ethernet-based servers to 10 Gigabit Ethernet-based high-performance servers, to start the transition to the new virtualized environment.

The second generation Summit X650-24t consumes 200W less power during operation than the first generation, to address the energy efficiency goals of data center planners. Summit X650 Top-of-Rack data center switch can support copper 10 Gigabit. The switch is also designed to address networking growth, including future high-speed 40 Gigabit Ethernet and 100 Gigabit Ethernet with its Versatile Interface Module architecture built into the switch.

Officials at Extreme Networks said that less power usage is very essential for datacenters where space, heat and bandwidth have to be optimized and the new greener and power efficient Summit X650 offers excellent energy efficiency and provides customers with cost-effective 10GbE options for standard RJ45 copper interfaces using CAT 5 and CAT 6 cabling, up to 100 meters, making it a perfect fit for the data center.

The Summit X650 is also complemented with Intel’s (News - Alert) new lower power 10GBASE-T adapter that provides state-of-the-art interfaces to high performance servers.

Steve Schultz, director of marketing, Intel LAN Access Division has commented that 10GBASE-T is the driver for broader adoption of 10GbE because of its simplicity, backward compatibility with 1000BASE-T, and low cost copper cabling. The 10GBASE-T is also expected on server motherboards in the not too distant future and this is essential because 10GbE is the unified networking fabric for next generation data centers.

Recently Extreme Networks purchased software assets of Soapstone Networks (News - Alert) and unveiled BlackDiamond 20808 Metro Ethernet transport switch.
