Avago Announces Energy Efficient Digital Optocoupler

Avago Technologies, a supplier of analog interface components for communications, industrial and consumer applications,  has announced an energy efficient 1MBd digital optocoupler for designers of communication interfaces, microcontroller system interfaces, switching power supplies, and digital isolation for A/D, D/A conversion applications.

The company claims that their compact low power ACPL-M50L single channel optocoupler operates on approximately 80 percent less drive current than standard 1MBd digital optocouplers available in the market today.

Available immediately, Avago’s new product can provide high voltage performance over the lifetime of the product. It also successfully meets safe insulation requirements for reinforced applications.

The company is offering the ACPL-M50L in a small outline-5 (SO-5) package size and that can support a wide supply voltage range from 2.7 to 24-volts.

Because the offering is driven by low forward drive current (IF > 3mA) with a high current transfer ratio (CTR > 80 percent min.), it allows direct drive from a microcontroller without the need to add a buffer chip.

Also, Avago’s ACPL-M50L has separate connections for the photodiode bias and its output transistor collector can increase its speed up to a hundred times over that of a conventional photo-transistor. The product is also ideal for harsh industrial environments as it can operate over a wide temperature range of -40 to +105 degrees C.
