NSN Offers New Set of Energy-Saving Solutions for Telcos

Telecom equipment vendor Nokia Siemens Networks has unveiled a set of green energy solutions that company officials said will help telecom operators cut operating costs and power consumption significantly.

At the heart of the solution is a technology that promises to help operators save fuel by better managing battery charging and discharging. In addition, the service allows for remote data collection and control.

Energy costs account for up to 10 percent of the cost of network operations in developed markets and 15 percent to 30 percent in developing markets.

NSN says it has already deployed more than 390 renewable energy sites worldwide, using its popular Flexi base station.
“It comprises all the ingredients necessary for substantially reducing telecoms energy use and a shift towards renewable energy,” said Ashish Chowdhary, head of services, Nokia Siemens (News - Alert) Networks.
Chowdhary said mobile operator Telenor Pakistan had signed for NSN’s off-grid site solution using solar energy.
NSN’s energy solution consists of six elements including: energy modernization; off-grid site solution; bad-grid site solution; energy efficiency consulting; green energy control and energy OPEX (News - Alert) management.
Energy is a significant percentage of a communications service provider’s operating costs. In mature markets, energy accounts for 10 percent of the operating costs, and up to 30 percent in the developing markets.
NSN officials said its solutions reduce energy consumption by better managing the power demands of specific sites, such as mobile base stations. And they allow for the profitable and efficient expansion of networks in rural and remote areas by eliminating the need for diesel generators, providing a more cost-efficient and environmentally friendly way to extend connectivity.
NSN has deployed more than 390 sites running on renewable energy in 25 countries and its Flexi multi-radio base station has the lowest energy consumption on the market.
