Green Technology -nlyte Software Debuts Free Carbon Footprint Assessment for CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme

Nlyte Software, formerly Global DataCenter Management, a company that offers data center performance management solutions, has reportedly launched a free, tailored carbon footprint assessment for all UK organizations impacted by the Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme.

Likely to start in April 2010, the CRC emissions trading scheme is the U.K.'s mandatory climate change and energy saving scheme, a compulsory measure taken to improve energy efficiency and reduce the amount of carbon dioxide emitted in the U.K. Reportedly, organizations exceeding the mandated energy consumption levels will have to calculate and report on their annual emissions and also forecast future emission allowances and maintain auditable records.

According to nlyte Software's research, any data center occupying more than 50,000 square feet will consume around 5 Megawatt hours of power in a year, which is five-sixths of the annual CRC allowance. When added to other organizational energy usage, it is highly likely that any organization with a U.K.-based data center of 50,000 square feet or more will have to support the scheme.

Before the U.K. CRC legislation goes into full effect, organizations are looking to ensure that their data centers' forecasted emission allowances are accurately included as part of their compliance strategies. Addressing this requirement, nlyte Software is offering a free carbon footprint assessment for every impacted organization which will help them assess the implications of this important new legislation and to make appropriate preparations.

"I am excited to provide companies with a report that helps them to optimize their data center energy usage in support of the CRC," said Robert Neave, co-founder and vice president of sustainable IT initiatives, nlyte Software, in a statement. "We can help companies avoid the penalties associated with poor emission scores, achieve the best possible ranking in the performance league table and reduce their data center's carbon footprint."

The free carbon footprint assessment will provide a vendor independent view of the data center's active power utilization based on modelled power and real-time power consumption. Additionally, the report will also offer an organization with a real-time view of current and future CRC allowance requirements, helping targets be prepared for data centers and changes to align with U.K. CRC allowances.

Nlyte Software also said that it is ready to provide the same service to any environmentally responsible company that is looking to reduce the carbon footprint of its data center.
