IT is Key Enabler of Corporate Responsibility, Sustainability: Report

A recent Deloitte online poll reportedly showed that more than 40 percent of employees believe their company's information technology department is very involved in corporate responsibility and sustainability efforts. Energy and carbon management were top concerns of the IT department, according to the respondents.

The poll examined how enterprise sustainability initiatives, including energy and carbon management programs, have significant impacts and implications for information technology groups.

Lee Dittmar, principal, Deloitte (News - Alert) Consulting, said that companies today are relying more on CIOs to help drive business strategies and innovation. The poll indicates that enterprises have begun to see IT as an essential enabler of sustainability efforts throughout the company.

Deloitte Consulting has observed that providing technology to manage and report on enterprise-wide energy use and carbon emissions is present on the agendas of chief information officers more frequently now. They are also more focused on determining how IT can serve as the foundational platform to manage corporate responsibility and sustainability initiatives.

Dittmar said that in addition to providing sustainability measurement and reporting tool sets, CIOs need to be prepared to make the case for IT's role in managing and improving sustainability strategies, programs and initiatives. He suggested that the senior technology executives should try to establish baseline measurements, determine information needs to measure progress at all levels, ensure information availability and accessibility as well as evaluate IT capabilities to measure, monitor and report CR&S.

The recent Deloitte and CFO Research Services study, "The Next Wave of Green IT," identified an information quality gap between IT and finance executives and Knox said this gap can be narrowed if the organizations leverage IT as a driver and enabler of enterprise sustainability.
