Westview Products, Inc. Illuminates Independence Station, 'World's Greenest Building'

Westview Products, Inc. said it will invite the light to shine into Independence Station while helping the structure maintain energy independence.

When the $15 million building in Independence, Ore., opens next year, it is expected to become the “World’s Greenest Building,” according to Westview. The building is all set to get the world’s highest LEED rating when it gets completed in 2010.

Westview will be participating at Independence Station in the window walls, where wood structures and a high-performance glazing system will enhance the building’s beauty as well as maintain energy efficiency. The use of insulated glass units will minimize heat gain and loss, reduce noise and also eliminate the fading effects of ultra-violet light. Certified sustainable wood structures will be used to bring the warmth of wood to the interior environment with minimal environmental impact.

According to Steven Ribeiro, a developer at Aldeia, LLC, Westview products provide an environmentally friendly and beautiful design element for Independence Station. In addition, their proximity to the project allows them to enjoy the energy saving benefits of local trading.

The wood structures that support the window walls at Independence Station fall under Westview Products’ Forest Stewardship Council chain-of-custody certificate [SW-COC-003915]. The certification has been issued through the “SmartWood Program” of the Rainforest Alliance. It provides assurance to the consumer of the integrity of materials. The wood products from Westview are documented from the time of their growth in well-managed forests through the entire cycle of harvesting, milling and manufacturing.

According to Bob Ottaway, president of Westview Products, Inc., said the company recognizes its corporate responsibility to provide environmentally friendly products for customers. This commitment is mirrored at Independence Station, where Westview Products will support the effort to bring the World’s Greenest Building designation to their backyard.

The building will obtain its energy primarily from the sun and waste vegetable oil. The $15 million, 57,000-square-foot project will contain real and virtual offices, residential units, a restaurant, an Internet café, a green data storage facility, research facilities and classroom space.
