ON Semiconductor Rolls Out New Series of Thyristor Surge Protection Devices

ON Semiconductor, global supplier of high performance, energy efficient, silicon solutions, has reportedly unveiled the new NP-MC series, belonging to company’s family of ultra-low capacitance Thyristor Surge Protection Devices.

The new NP-MC series comes in a small 2.6 mm x 4.3 mm SMB package and offers designers to achieve compliance with the various industry regulatory standards such as GR-1089-CORE, ITU-T-K.20/K.21/K.45, and IEC (News - Alert) 60950. It is based on a pair of intertwined bipolar transistors created by a 4 layer stack of n and p doped silicon regions, which offers protection to sensitive electronic equipment from transient overvoltage conditions.

The NP-MC series is currently available in full range of industry-standard voltage levels and surge current ratings from 50 amperes (A) to 200 A, this new series of TSPDs from ON Semiconductor provides a solution for DSLAM, FTTx, ethernet, POE and VoIP systems.

It also provides low nominal off state capacitance translates into extremely low differential capacitance and linearity with applied voltage or frequency. Low leakage currents, precise turn-on voltages, and low voltage overshoot along with high surge current capability, underline the NP-MC series’ class-leading specification, the company said.

Gary Straker, general manager of the protection and control division at ON Semiconductor, said that the new NP-MC transient surge protection series is a breakthrough product that not only helps designers achieve compliance with stringent industry standards, but also specify remarkably low capacitance to minimize troublesome distortion that often plagues the latest high-speed telecom circuits.

He said these new circuit protection devices offer fast switching and high surge current ratings positions ON Semiconductor to better service their customers' needs.

The company is currently offering the NP-MC series of devices at a budgetary price between $0.12 and $0.25 USD per unit in 10,000 unit quantities.

With its global logistics network and broad product portfolio, ON Semiconductor operates a network of manufacturing facilities, sales offices, and design centers in key markets throughout North America, Europe, and the Asia Pacific regions.
