Greenstone Debuts Tool to Audit IT Estates

Greenstone, a carbon solutions company, has announced the launch of Green IT, a new tool to accurately audit IT estates such as desktop computers, servers, peripherals and data center appliances. Using the data collected from this tool, companies can plan and strategically reduce their energy consumption and their carbon footprints.

Green IT is an addition to the company’s Acco2unt carbon accounting suite which enables emissions measurement and management, reporting and tracking, as well as 'what if' scenario planning and ROI estimation.

Built on the Greenhouse Gases (GHG) protocol methodology, Green IT matches internationally recognized standards in carbon measurement and meets the needs of governments and companies under continued pressure to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

According to Ram Ramachander, COO at Greenstone Carbon Management, they recognize the difficulty organizations face in measuring their energy consumption and carbon emissions of their IT infrastructures accurately.

“Many organizations still rely on Excel spreadsheets and this method just isn’t reliable or practical to update,” Ramachander said.

Green IT was designed for large organizations to gain meaningful information about their IT estate and enable them to develop practical strategies to tackle carbon emissions. By having accurate reports about their IT structure, companies can make informed decisions about future IT infrastructure changes and upgrades, and understand which IT investments will provide the greatest reductions in energy consumption.

Also, these detailed and timely reports will help organizations avoid the heavy fines and other penalties potentially incurred by providing inaccurate information.

Apart from simplifying the auditing processes for large organizations, Green IT can also be used in quickly measuring the impact of upgrading or replacing IT equipment on energy consumption and carbon emissions.
