1102 GRAND, a Midwest Internet hub, announced that it is reviewing its historic landmark building for opportunities regarding green IT solutions for their building.
The company specializes in providing collocation and interconnection services to customers in both small businesses and large corporations spanning all vertical markets world wide.
With green initiatives on the up swing among several data centers across the U.S data center and Internet hub 1102 GRAND is attempting to green its IT operations. It will be implementing green solutions so as to make its building truly green for achieving the LEED certification. However there are doubts raised regarding this as the building in question is a historic landmark.
Darren Bonawitz, co-owner of 1102 GRAND said, “We have been lowering emissions in other ways as we balance the need to green IT with this historic landmark building. Keep in mind that we are not only dealing with the power needed to operate networking equipment but the power required to cool the generated heat load.”
Bonawitz also said the biggest challenge at 1102 GRAND is owning a building on the historic registry which is unusual for data centers. But efforts are being made against all odds where ever possible, he added.
“We are working to lower energy usage knowing that this building will never be LEED certified and there are not a lot of case studies of companies that have done this before; we are entering uncharted or undocumented territories for a building of our age with the needs and power usage of our tenants,” said Bonawitz.
1102 GRAND has come up with some suitable solutions to make their building green like installing newer model computer room air conditioners that are more energy efficient. The areas under raised floors are maintained such that there is least congestion there and air flow monitored through collocation rooms.
Hot zones are strictly watched and the temperature is raised in the data centers the company operates by three degrees according to recommendations in a recent ASHRAE publication.
In spite of facing limitations in the input in the networking equipment in the facility as it is in private data centers 1102 GRAND is focusing on infrastructure pieces and customers are educated on the contributions they can make towards saving energy.
1102 GRAND announced that it will be publishing a series of white papers and blogs to educate IT executives with respect to data center choices. Weekly topics which will be dealt with include power, energy, heating and cooling, green IT and space.
