The New York-based data center of Internap is an N+1 rated facility. This data center now has an additional 8,500 square feet of data center space and is also outfitted with the industry’s newest energy-efficient systems. The facility’s raised floor space measures up to 33,500 square feet. Fully integrated with the company’s Performance IP networking and content delivery network, this facility is one of the nine company-controlled data center locations of Internap.
In the current economy, customers must have a higher density power solution to stand out in the marketplace. According to Mike Higgins, general manager and vice president of data center operations at Internap, the implementation of green initiatives in the NYC locale has provided its Manhattan customers with a data center that is 15 percent to 20 percent more energy efficient than one using conventional technologies.
Internap has increased the amount of power available for customer IT loads by improving operating efficiencies within the data center infrastructure. Higgins also said that since both state and federal governments continue to increase the number of rebates for green initiatives in the data center, they are planning to take advantage of those opportunities now as well as in the future.
The Manhattan facility is also equipped with an ultrasonic humidification system, which uses less energy than traditional methods for balancing humidity. In addition, energy-efficient electronically commutated fans and variable frequency drives were installed within the air conditioning systems. EC fans provide immediate energy savings of up to 30 percent over units using conventional technology Also, VFDs adjust motor speed to better match output requirements, thereby resulting in further energy savings.
The facility has also been integrated with an Energy Management System to monitor and control all critical infrastructure in the data center. This system balances AC units, space temperatures, humidity and other controls to ensure systems work in unison. In recognition of its energy-efficient enhancements, Internap is expecting rebate checks from the New York State Energy Research and Development Organization.
