Alert), Syracuse University and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority.
The energy-efficient data center will consume 50 percent less energy when compared to a typical data center making it a “green” computer center in operation revealed Validus.
The company will be providing the core power infrastructure equipment for creating and delivering direct current power to the IBM z10 systems. Syracuse University also aims to develop and use such “green” innovations through this data center. IBM plans to demonstrate energy efficient technologies at the data center to enable clients to design data enters in similar ways for their operations.
“By eliminating unnecessary power losses of a traditional alternating current data center Syracuse University will be positioned to run IBM’s systems for significantly less cost and with a considerably smaller carbon footprint,” says Rudy Kraus, Chief Executive Officer, Validus DC Systems.
“The improved efficiency and reliability of a higher voltage direct current system will allow Syracuse to experience a reduction in energy costs while delivering overall system modularity and ease of integration of current and future renewable energy sources,” added Kraus.
Syracuse University selected Validus owing to its experience in enterprise data centers and its optimized high voltage direct current technology. High-quality power distribution technology is an important requisite as Syracuse will house a university data center powered by onsite generation, said university sources.
The electrical tri-generation system will employ an array of natural gas-fueled micro turbines which can generate all the necessary electricity besides providing the cooling required for the computer infrastructure. This enables the data center, which will be operational by this year end, to operate completely off-grid explained Validus.
Validus delivers enterprise class direct current infrastructure power equipment ranging from -600 VDC to -48 VDC. Its technology helps companies reduce energy consumption significantly and also reliably. The installation and, maintenance costs are also minimized considerably. Enterprise data centers can save a lot on operational costs with Validus’ next generation topology and it also enables easy integration of renewable and alternative energy sources.
