Verizon Wireless Helping Employees and Customers Go Green

Verizon Wireless has announced it is employing innovative practices that are helping the company reduce power usage and helping their stores and offices to be more energy efficient.

These green practices include the ability for Verizon (News - Alert) Wireless customers to consume fewer resources, reduce the amount of paper they use and keep old cell phones and batteries out of landfills.

In order to make their stores more productive and energy efficient, Verizon said it has also deployed devices for temperature sensing and energy management to monitor heating, ventilating and air-conditioning system use; controlling temperature set-points as well as internal and external lighting schedules; and tracking data usage history for maintenance and service requirements.

To make the desktop PCs used in its offices more energy efficient, the company has also installed energy saving technologies and deployed more than 19000 thin clients in 24 of their call centers.

In light of this, the company said that 30 of its stores have been selected by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for their efficiency and were awarded an ENERGY STAR (News - Alert), the national symbol for superior energy efficiency and environmental protection.

Verizon customers can choose to get their bills via online only and also update account information and make payments or sign up for direct payment options through the Internet which saves the company from having to use large amounts of paper.

Verizon Wireless' exclusive HopeLine phone recycling and refurbishing program also prevents old wireless phones in any condition from any manufacturer from going into landfills. Since October 2001, the company said that more than 1 million phones have been properly disposed of in an environmentally sound way and as a result, more than 200 tons of electronics waste has been kept out of landfills.
