D-Link, a provider of end-to-end networking solutions, announced that it has rolled out a new 16-port managed Gigabit switch - the D-Link Green (DGS (

Alert)-3200-16) - which is an energy saving Green switch.

In general, a network switch is a small hardware device that joins multiple computers together within one local area network (LAN). It performs a switching function, which interconnects the communication links and sub-networks for transmission of data between the end stations. The process involves transferring information, such as digital data packets or frames, among entities of the network.
According to D-Link (

Alert), its D-Link Green can automatically detect a device link status as well as reduce the power usage of ports by up to 14.28 percent that are not linked or when detected link down, without sacrificing network performance.
Featuring a smart fan that has heat sensors, the DGS-3200-16 switch has the capability to maintain the temperature of the device - for optimum performance. This smart fan turns off by default and automatically turns on when the system operation temperature reaches or surpasses 95°F, in order to reduce noise pollution and energy consumption, said the company.
Claiming to be the first company to introduce Green networking solutions, D-Link said that its Green technology has enabled its managed switch products to provide an environmentally friendly solution.
Apart from DGS-3200-16, D-Link also offers a complete line of Green Technology products, including Wi-Fi routers, network attached storage (NAS), and Internet-enabled digital photo frames. The company has plans to roll-out new D-Link Green Powerline network adapters, soon to the market.
D-Link said that it has also launched a new website, www.dlinkgreen.com, which shows company's Green initiatives, such as conserving energy, protecting the environment from harmful substances and reducing waste by using recyclable packaging. The site also provides an overview of D-Link Green technology, which provides eco-friendly alternatives without compromising performance.
In order to be labeled D-Link Green, the company’s products have to be qualified. The company has instituted a program to which all of its Green solutions must comply. The requirement for getting qualified include - the product must be incorporate with company’s energy-saving technology; must be complaint with green initiatives such as WEEE, RoHS, and ENERGY STAR (

Alert); and use company’s eco-friendly sustainable packaging such as sleeveless design and soy ink.
