In an effort to reduce energy utilization in its office,
Cegedel, an energy provider in Luxembourg, has chosen
FalconStor Virtual Tape Library (VTL) solution with data duplication facilities. The company will also get other facilities such as virtualized servers and protection of its VMware environment with this partnership.
Although backup is an important part of handling the data in a company, many backup applications continuously create new copies of the same data. This results in a large amount of duplicate data which in turn increases the required storage capacity on tape and disk. With a data duplication product, companies can reduce media costs, streamline management tasks and minimize the bandwidth required for replication.
Cegedel has decided that the company wanted to improve the performance of its LAN usage. The company also had an aim of reducing carbon footprint and supporting renewable energy. This could be achieved by redesigning backup processes and opting for a LAN-free backup.
Redesigning storage and backup processes with FalconStor solutions, Cegedel put a server virtualization strategy in place using VMware Infrastructure to solve this problem. The company says Cegedel´s new storage architecture offers much higher performance.
“Consolidation and virtualization are key energy-saving technologies because they enable data center administrators to accomplish more tasks using less energy," said Guillaume Imberti, FalconStor vice president and general manager, EMEA operations. "Cegedel is an innovative energy company leveraging FalconStor technology to enjoy a huge amount of energy savings from using less spinning disk for nearline storage. They are savoring the green benefits from FalconStor VTL.”
Cegedel now backs up 6 terabytes in full system backups. Data is written to physical tape through the FalconStor VTL´s integration with the physical tape library. Cegedel can now have almost unlimited number of tape drives without additional investment in hardware.
Recently,
Charles Vogele, the Swiss fashion retail enterprise, has
deployed the FalconStor Virtual Tape Library (VTL) solution to provide comprehensive data protection - including storage consolidation, business continuity and disaster recovery - for some 90 terabytes of business data, including 25 terabytes of production data.
