NTT Europe Online, a data center services company, has chosen
Foundry Networks’ data center switching solution, the BigIron RX Series, as part of a data center upgrade in Paris and Madrid.
This is a multi-phase project. Following the completion of the project, NTT Europe Online will provide its customers with switching capabilities to support network infrastructures, managed services and hosted applications. The project will also support large volumes of event-driven online traffic.
Rising power costs present a major challenge for data centers. Selection of Foundry Networks (

“We wanted to upgrade our network and future-proof it for the next five to seven years, so it was essential that we had high-speed Ethernet connectivity,” said Craig Pennington, vice president of operations, NTT Europe Online, in a statement.
“Reducing power consumption was another consideration and, with costs increasing year-on-year, we wanted to manage this as much as possible,” Pennington added. “Foundry really won out on reduced power consumption. Many vendors make claims about how much power and space they can save, but Foundry really delivers on its promise.”
The customers of NTT Europe Online rely on the company to deliver zero downtime, continual access to resources, and deliver managed services. Building complex network infrastructure is a critical component in retaining its customers. Controlling operation costs is another focus area.
“NTT Europe Online deals with huge volumes of traffic on a daily basis and Foundry is helping to underpin its business offering,” said Ken Cheng, vice president and general manager for Foundry's High-End and Service Provider Systems Business Unit, in a statement. “We are pleased to be an integral networking solution for NTT Europe Online's infrastructure.”
The current expansion is part of NTT Europe Online’s efforts to gain performance and operational efficiencies. NTT Europe Online deployed the BigIron RX Series backbone switches in the two data centers due to ease of management and interoperability with existing data center equipment.
Multiple BigIron RX-16 and BigIron RX-8 switches have been installed at both locations for high-performance aggregation and backbone switching to provide network resilience with Ethernet connectivity and lower operational costs.
