Telecom Italia Picks 'Green' Solutions from Nokia Siemens to Upgrade 3G Networks

“Ultra” is a word that gets tossed around a fair amount in the communications technologies industries. And, with good reason. To deliver the types of services consumers and businesses demand, providers must ensure that their networks are “ultra” in a variety of ways, not least by offering adequate bandwidth.

A recent example of a company taking the “ultra” imperative was Telecom Italia’s selection of Nokia Siemens Networks to become a main supplier of new architecture. The goal: accelerate evolution of Telecom Italia’s (News - Alert) mobile network in Italy, making it ready to deliver ultra broadband services. Oh, and to help save Earth in the process.

Nokia Siemens (News - Alert) Networks is now a strategic supplier for Telecom Italia, delivering broadband access networks with High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) and Long Term Evolution (LTE (News - Alert)) technologies.

Terms of the deal call on Nokia Siemens to modernize Telecom Italia’s 3G mobile networks with energy-efficient radio access solutions, based on Nokia’s (News - Alert) Flexi Base Station. This particular product is software-upgradable for LTE implementations, offering a smooth evolution path coupled with a small footprint.

Telecom Italia anticipates achieving lower operational costs thanks to the improvements being made by Nokia Siemens.

Nokia Siemens is a heavyweight in the “ultra” market for broadband network solutions. The company has operations in 150 countries, and employs roughly 20,000 service professionals worldwide. It serves upwards of 130 WCDMA radio network clients, and has enabled more than 100 operators to launch HSDPA services that connect 100 million+ subscribers.

One of the key reasons Telecom Italia picked Nokia Siemens is the latter company’s environmentally-friendly innovations, which are not only good for the planet but also for the bottom line. Thanks to Nokia Siemens technology, Telecom Italia expects to reduce its power consumption by as much as 65 percent, translating to an annual drop in CO2 emissions of roughly 15 million Kg. That’s about equivalent to the amount of CO2 absorbable by 1.5 million trees.

Plus, customers will be happy: they’ll gain higher-speed downloads, faster online gaming, and video with improved quality.

Nokia Siemens Networks (News - Alert) has a clear vision of the future and turn it into solutions in which efficiency and ecology go hand in hand,” said  Stefano Pileri, head of Telecom Italia’s technology and operations divisions, in a statement. “The radio modernization is expected to improve the current quality of our network thanks to more advanced features, which will be made available on the new network elements provided.”
