Green Technology -Additions to Sun Netra Carrier-Grade Server Family

Sun Microsystems (News - Alert) has made additions to its Sun Netra carrier-grade server family to improve performance, efficiency and scalability in the data center for telecommunication service providers. The Sun Netra servers offer customers a choice of DC or AC power options as well as a variety of operating systems.

The new servers are:
Sun Netra X4250 server – a 2U rackmount server powered by 2 high-performance LV quad-core Intel (News - Alert) Xeon processors
Sun Netra X4450 server – a 4U rackmount server which is the industry’s only carrier-grade server to be powered by four quad-core Intel Xeon processors
Sun Netra T5440 server - a 4U rackmount server powered by two UltraSPARC T2 Plus processors

The Sun Netra X4250 and Sun Netra X4450 servers enable customers to save on space, energy consumption and cooling costs. Using Quad-Core Intel Xeon processors with on-die caches, high-clock speeds and low-power envelopes, the servers are equipped with two or four power-efficient processors. Both servers are capable of forwarding large packets at near-wireline speed, measured on the Layer 3 forwarding tests using IP version 4 protocol.

Other main features are:
Sun Netra X4250 server will support up to 16 memory slots and four internal disk drives in a 2U, 20-inch-deep carrier-grade package. The low-power Intel Xeon Processor (News - Alert) L5408 dissipates a maximum of 40W of power, or 10W per core.

Sun Netra X4450 provides a platform for consolidation and virtualization. Customers will be able to consolidate Solaris OS, Linux and Windows applications on a single 4U NEBS-certified server due to features like 32 memory DIMM slots, more than 1 TB of storage, and 10 PCI slots. Each Intel Xeon Processor E7338 dissipates a maximum of 80W of power, or 20W per core.

The dual processors of Sun Netra T5440 server support 128 compute threads. Sun Netra T5440 allows virtualized services to be developed, deployed and supported on a single system. It delivers more than three times the throughput as competitive dual-socket x86 systems. Each UltraSPARC T2 Plus processor has eight Floating Point Units, cache coherency logic, cryptographic acceleration, and PCIe I/O onboard. The power supplies will reduce power consumption and heat generation.

The Sun Netra X4250 and X4450 servers have an entry-level pricing which starts at $4,295 and $14,995 respectively. The entry-level pricing of Sun Netra T5440 server starts at $19,635. The new Sun Netra servers are being deployed by customers like Nokia-Siemens, Sonus Networks (News - Alert) and TELES Communication Systems.
