Motivate Customers with Green Rewards

By Stefania Viscusi

Not only are today's companies concentrating more and more on their environmental responsibilities, consumers too, are moving toward more green practices in a bid to help the planet.

Taking these two forces and combining them in a way that make business sense, is where mokugift comes in.

mokugift, ( 'moku' means tree in Japanese and island in Hawaiian)  is a way for companies to reward their customers by planting trees.

Hans Chung, the company's co-founder, pointed out that this can be especially useful for Web companies as a way to reward consumers for providing feedback, inviting friends or joining their email lists.

Once consumers opt in, they receive an email from mokugift letting them know about a tree being planted on their behalf. Consumers also receive the option to display a virtual tree on Facebook (News - Alert) or other sites as way of showing others their environmental practices.

This means that for just $1, a tree is planted in the real world-- a consumer can display their environmental benefit, and the company can get measurable returns.

And because 83% of Americans have said they would choose products and services with environmental benefits over non-environmental alternatives, the solution makes perfect sense.

According to mokugift, trees are planted in one of twelve countries fighting deforestation.

Back in August, Aberdeen (News - Alert) Group  issued a report titled, "Getting From Green to Gold: Retail Success Factors and Outcomes.”

The report uncovered that retailers focused on leveraging sustainability initiatives increased customer loyalty.

Jhana Senxian, sustainability and corporate responsibility specialist at Aberdeen and report author, commented, "Sustainability is as much about change in organizational culture as it is about process transformation. Accordingly, vision, leadership, education, and communication are as important as processes and technology. To be successful, companies must be visionary, holistic, and quantitative in approach."
