Motorola (News - Alert) recently announced that its manufacturing facility at Sriperumbudur near Chennai was honored with the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEEDR) Silver certification by the Indian Green Buildings Council. The award recognizes Motorola’s factory as the first green manufacturing site in India, Motorola said.
The LEEDR India Green Building Rating System is a voluntary, consensus-based, market-driven building rating system based on existing proven technology. It evaluates environmental performance from a whole building perspective over a building’s life cycle, providing a definitive standard for what constitutes a green building.
Under the LEEDR Green Building Rating System, Motorola’s manufacturing facility was evaluated on several parameters, including water usage, energy, material and resource selection, besides indoor environmental quality.
Motorola focused on sustainable site development during the construction of the manufacturing facility, managing storm water runoff and providing rainwater harvesting pond. The factory premises have been beautified with green belt. The facility has also been provided with water recycling facility, by which it is able to reduce municipal water consumption.
Motorola has incorporated an energy-efficient model for its manufacturing facility through efficient designing of HVAC and Electrical system integrated with Building Management System.
To manage waste materials, the company has adopted a construction and operation waste management plan. The factory maintains indoor environmental quality by focusing on indoors and outdoors air quality management, environmental tobacco smoke control and availability of maximum natural light indoors.
The award was presented at the ongoing Green Building Congress organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
Speaking on the occasion, Soumitra Sana, country president, Motorola India, said, “Motorola has a deep and abiding respect for the environment. We comprehensively addressed every environmental footprint and built in best global practices at every stage of the factory’s lifecycle: from design to construction to operations. Meeting the LEEDR Silver certification is a beginning. We are raising our environmental friendliness and sustainability bar higher.”
“Motorola has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to essential and increasingly critical goals of conserving energy and protecting the environment,” said Prem Jain, chairman, Indian Green Buildings Council (IGBC). “The company’s Sriperumbudur facility is the first manufacturing plant in India to receive this recognition. We hope others will follow the example.”
