UK Furthering Investment in Green Technology

As we move further and further into the 21st century, more and more governments are clearly starting to see the real draw that green technology has on the world community. Green energy is not some fringe tech that only the truly devoted understand or use. Green energy and green technology have become big business, with some investments costing a pretty penny. Companies like Urban Green Energy are even rolling out devices and applications at trade shows like CES (News - Alert) in order to drum up even more business and interest.

The United Kingdom has been well known as a part of Europe that has been heavily invested in rolling out green technology, and it was announced today that their latest budget will free up as much as 7 billion pounds ($10 billion) in order to invest in the greening up of some of its most important infrastructure. Most of these green technology jobs have to do with getting renewable energy on their electrical grid.

Energy regulator Ofgem has said that Scotland in particular will get the chance to beef up its electrical grid with an infusion of $4.5 billion up front. That amount is expected to fund green projects from 2013 to 2021 and should there be a need for more money, Great Britain has earmarked another $7.3 billion for those projects if the projects are approved by regulators. Perhaps best of all is that while the taxpayers will be footing some of the bill for this, their cost should be almost negligible. The government says that at most, the average citizen will see their utility bills go up 35 pence ($0.54) per year.

One of the companies getting this money, Scottish Power, said that it will be using its portions to get to the point where they can derive about 11 gigawatts of power from offshore wind turbines. The company also expects to double the export capacity of its power cables. These projects come at a time when jobs are in high demand in the Green Technology sector.

"This investment will create up to 1,500 new jobs and deliver plans to connect enough green energy for 6 million homes," said Frank Mitchell, chief executive of Scottish Power Energy Networks.
