The United States can virtually eliminate the need for imported energy in four years, through advancements in energy exploration that tap into the nation's rich domestic energy resources, according to Advanced Energy Center of America, a Fort Worth-based company that provides logistics, shipping, and storage services to North America oil fields.
In fact, Advanced Energy Center of America (AECA) has established the “urgent goal” to become 100 percent independent of foreign oil by July 4, 2016 (eDAY2016)—and for a “shock effect,” the organization features live data on its website about the real-time dollar value of U.S. oil imports since January 1, 2011 (some $490 billion, at the time this article was written).
The website asserted that, “With some 50 percent of the United States oil supply coming from foreign sources, America's vulnerability is exposed to political unrest and sovereign [malevolent] intent. Over the last year, American has imported almost $500 billion worth of oil, even as militaristic posturing now threatens the strategic Strait of Hormuz in the Middle East.”
The solution, according to AECA, is good old American innovation. “In recent years, America's engineering brilliance has paved the way for innovative companies to lead America to energy independence again,” CEO Farrell Arceneaux commented, adding, “New drilling technologies, such as hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling, [have]led to a domestic boom in extraction of resources from geologic shale formations that were thought to be worthless until recently.”
He sees value in all renewable energy sources, but perceives an immediate opportunity in natural gas. “Harnessing wind and solar power is important to our planet and continual development of alternative energy holds great long-term potential,” Arceneaux said. “However, a more immediate solution is natural gas, an abundant and affordable fuel that burns much cleaner than gasoline or other fossil fuels.”
AECA believes that energy independence and renewable energy are not subjects for partisan debate. “Energy independence has been discussed frequently in the Republican presidential campaign,” Arceneaux said. “But energy independence is a broad, non-partisan goal that can be embraced by all American leaders, from President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden to Republican candidates Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul, Rick Perry, Mitt Romney, and Rick Santorum.”
“Developing a comprehensive national energy policy that envelops environmental protection and economic development, while leading our nation to greater national security through energy independence is a vital concern that needs to be addressed immediately by elected officials and national leadership,” concluded Arceneaux.
