Green-Friendly Flexible Job Openings on the Rise for 2012

By FlexJobs

According to the Flexible Jobs Index, open employment positions that offer some type of flexibility were up in Dec. 2011, indicating that environmentally friendly work styles like working from home, freelancing, and working a flexible schedule, are on the rise. The jobs help reduce pollution by keeping commuters off the road completely, or during rush hours.

The career fields with the highest increase in available jobs were Business Development, Non-profit and Philanthropy, Account Management, Medical and Health and Data Entry. And overall, the top fields with the most available positions included Medical & Health - which reclaimed its top position in Dec. after leading most of 2011 - followed by Administrative, Education & Training, Computer & IT, and Sales.

“As the benefits to offering telecommuting continue to hit mainstream media, the available opportunities continue to rise,” Sara Sutton Fell, CEO of FlexJobs said. “As more and more companies jump on the work-from-home and flexible job trend, we'll see a decrease to the environmental damage caused by traditional work styles, and an increase in work-life balance for employees."

Worth noting, two job categories that are typically thought of as telecommute-friendly, Graphic Design and Web & Software Development, saw a decrease in job listings in December. Following with lower numbers were Art & Creative, Customer Service, and Bilingual, but in general, numbers were still up over all.

Further indications of a ‘greener’ working future are sites such as Practically Green, which demonstrate that all companies can be green companies through environmentally responsible practices, like encouraging alternate transportation to work. In fact, they have created a quiz for individuals to determine where they can become more sustainable, and they customize this quiz for corporations as well.

“The new year brings a new business outlook and a general openness from employers to try new sustainable approaches,” stated Fell. “And we’re hopeful for a greener future as a result.”
