GreenTouch's Large Scale Antenna System to be Demonstrated in Switzerland

GreenTouch, a consortium of providers, academic and industrial research institutions and non-governmental organizations, announced that GreenTouch Large Scale Antenna System (LSAS) built by the GreenTouch Mobile Communications Working Group was being demonstrated in Switzerland under the aegis of Swisscom (News - Alert), a telecommunications provider in Switzerland.

The demonstration explained how multiple antennas can be blended together to enhance the energy efficiency of wireless communications – the increase in number of antenna elements significantly brought down the transmitted radio power.

For example an antenna array made up from 100 elements could transmit only one percent of the energy transmitted by a single antenna and at the same time retaining the same quality. The demo also showed that greater the number of antenna elements deployed, lower was the power any antenna required to transmit the sample amount of information.

GreenTouch claimed that by combing this technology with other wireless technology advancements one can realize immense potential benefits.

Swisscom is a founding member of the GreenTouch consortium and the LSAS demonstration was for Swiss authorities responsible for compliance with non-ionizing radiation safety standards. In another event Swisscom's technical and managerial community witnessed the collaborative research done by GreenTouch.

GreenTouch asserted that it is excited that Swisscom is able to demonstrate LSAS technology. These technology demonstrations provide excitement in the ICT community and show the real impact of teams from around the globe working together to achieve significant change. With GreenTouch entering its second year, it expects to see an acceleration of technology demonstrators and their appearance worldwide.

Officials with Swisscom ascertained that Switzerland has some of the strictest limits on non-ionizing radiation in the world. The LSAS will bring a new paradigm on how the exposure to non-ionizing electromagnetic fields should be evaluated in the future. Due to its inherent, always changing, radiation pattern, some new thoughts might be needed and implemented in the Swiss legal framework.

In other news, GreenTouch recently announced that seven new organizations have joined the consortium, bringing the total number of member organizations to 53, and involving more than 300 individual participants.
