General Motors Announces All-Electric Chevy Spark

While the future of the internet is all about the social networking aspect, the future of the automobile industry is going as green as humanly possible. Seemingly recognizing a need for an all-electric car in its fleet, General Motors (News - Alert) announced that their Chevy Spark would go totally electric on its next release in 2013. The Spark will join the Chevy Volt, which is a hybrid electric and gas powered car in the company’s green initiative section.

The gasoline-powered mini-car Spark is currently only available in China, South Korea and India but is expected to be rolled out to other markets such as North America in 2012. While green cars are getting more popular, electric cars have had some problems catching on for a couple of different reasons.

The biggest reason why this particular line has struggled is because there simply aren’t enough charging stations out in the general public. Finding a place once you have left your house can be a bit of a problem.  That problem becomes larger if you want to go on a road trip from your home city to another.

One thing that could make this type of car a little more popular is if they continue to add some bells and whistles that have been popping up in other new cars.  One of General Motors’ top competitors, Nissan released their own green vehicle in the Leaf. Since that model’s release there have been quite a few cool little apps that have been released that allow you to see the car’s battery charge and the expected range right on your Android phone.

When talking about an all-electric car that can come in quite handy. Internet connected cars in general have long been billed as the cars of the future and while there are some safety concerns, people want to know their cars are on the cusp. Bringing some of these features to the Chevy Spark could drive up demand.

While the car was announced today, there isn’t a ton of details out there yet. The car is still a couple of years away, so actual availability and pricing are not yet available.
