Verdiem Provides a Centrally Managed Solution for USC Marshall

USC Marshall, one of the nation’s premier schools, was able to bring down energy costs and enhance IT efficiency by employing Verdiem Surveyor.

Network Engineer Brian Wood (News - Alert), who works at the USC Marshall's Information Technology Architecture for Academic Information Services, noted that when the school recently implemented a sustainability initiative it saw an opportunity for an IT energy management solution that could also enhance IT efficiency. Then it started looking for a product that would benefit the IT department and the overall organization. The school was in need of a tool that provided central management for desktop computers used by more than 5,000 users while meeting its mission to be more “green.”

The Verdiem Surveyor deployed for USC Marshall is said to be the industry’s most advanced solution for helping enterprises manage, measure and reduce their PC-network energy consumption. It allows the central administration of power management settings for networked PCs. Intelligent policies maximize energy savings by placing machines into a lower power states without interfering with end-user productivity, desktop maintenance or upgrades.

Wood added that one of Verdiem's (News - Alert) selling points for USC Marshall was that it offered a centrally managed solution. Another key piece was its Wake-on-WAN solution that extends Wake-on-LAN technology by providing a reliable and practical method for waking computers over a large organization.

USC Marshall supposedly uses Surveyor's Wake-on-WAN feature for its monthly maintenance period for its desktop computers and it was able to find a number of issues it had with computers connecting to the network and helped troubleshoot desktop problems.

Officials with Verdiem commented that of their key premises is that they help IT do their job better. Verdium is providing solutions that go beyond energy efficiency or PC power management and is helping IT become more efficient overall.
