This year's Climate Week NYC, annual global forum driving the "Clean Revolution (News - Alert)" has named BT, providers of communications services and solutions, among its list of eight business and government agencies that have helped in driving the support for transformational action on encouraging low carbon through use of innovative technologies, business practices and designs.
According to the report, "The ICT sector is at the forefront of developing and implementing technologies that will be central to the Clean Revolution. These smart energy technologies, together with measures to reduce the energy footprint of the sector, could reduce global emissions by as much as 15 percent by 2020. Through its everyday business, BT (News - Alert) is acting as catalyst for the Clean Revolution: first by demonstrating itself how emissions can be reduced while still maintaining growth; and second by providing the tools and technology to enable others to follow."
The Climate Group in its case study which was presented during the Opening Ceremony for Climate Week NYC highlighted the efforts and initiatives taken by BT to bring about reduction in energy consumption as well as to reduce its carbon footprint.
In a release, Mark Kenber, CEO of The Climate Group, said, "By realizing the opportunities in the low carbon economy, BT is not only driving its own business growth but is also helping to secure a better, smarter, safer, more prosperous world. BT's example proves that The Clean Revolution is not only possible – it's already underway."
Through its dedicated efforts since 1997, BT has been successful in bringing about a 59 percent reduction in CO2 emissions. Furthermore, the company has put into place a series of stringent rules and targets covering a number of sustainable development indicators for both energy and carbon. The company is expecting to further cut down its net CO2 emission by 80 percent by the year 2020 for which it is deploying system upgrades that can monitor and control energy consumption across its organizational network. BT reported a saving of more than $28 million by adopting an energy savings program designed to highlight viable energy saving measures.
Richard Tarboton, Director of Energy and Carbon Program, BT Group (News
- Alert), said, "The fundamental basis for our long term commitment to sustainability is to reduce our negative effects on the environment, hand in hand with cost reduction, and leverage our experience to help our customers enhance their sustainability through innovative products and services.”
