Move Over Tesla, Opel is Bringing in a New EV

Those of us who have seen “Who Killed the Electric Car” know that EVs are not a new concept. Conspiracy theories aside, we’re seeing more and more EVs creep into the market as fuel prices are constantly stripping our wallets and we become more environmentally aware.

Joining the ranks of Tesla and even Nissan, Opel is bringing a new concept EV to the market dubbed “One Euro Car.” The vehicle doesn’t have a cool, official moniker just yet.

According to Today in Tech, Opel’s One Euro Car is a two-seater concept car that can travel approximately 62 miles for just $1.41. Of course, many skeptics of EVs are more concerned with how fast the car can actually go, and this one promises a speedy 75 miles per hour.

The problem with EVs like Tesla is the price tag (News - Alert). You can get a vehicle ranging anywhere from $40K to $100K, and despite the want to move away from gas and be more environmentally sound, not everyone is willing to make room in their budgets for a hefty monthly payment, despite the lack of trips to the gas pump.

Opel, however is claiming this EV to be “affordable” although an actual number has yet to be revealed.

During the last few decades, environmental impact of the petroleum-based transportation infrastructure, along with the peak oil, has led to renewed interest in electric vehicles.

In fact, the US Department of Energy (DOE) is making a big investment in electric cars nationwide. The investment is part of DOE’s Clean Cities initiative, which is supporting the growth of energy efficient and renewable energy measures in America’s cities. Awards were given to 16 electric vehicle projects in 24 states and Washington DC.

The projects that were awarded funds are focused on accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and providing job training to individuals and college students to design and build EVs.

“By developing the next generation of automotive engineers and preparing communities for plug-in electric vehicles, these projects will help reduce our nation’s dependence on oil imports, create jobs, and help America capture the growing global market for advanced vehicles,” said Department of Energy Secretary Chu.
