Advantech Unveils RISC Single Board Computer with Low Power Consumption

Advantech (News - Alert), a global embedded computing company offering embedded platform solutions recently announced the successful development of a series of new RISC-based, Single Board Computer that is expected to take power saving to a new level.

Called, the PCM-C3500, the product line uses the latest Texas Instruments OMAP35 Series Processor (News - Alert), its maker said in a press release.

In addition to low power consumption at around 2W, Advantech PCM-C3500 series units are designed for wide-range temperature support, the company further clarified in the release.

Featuring the heat sink-free designs, the product series is ideally suited for various low-power applications in industrial control, HMI/kiosk, medical, and portable applications, according to the company.

Reduced instruction set computing, or RISC refers to a CPU design strategy that seeks to incorporate simple instructions into the design architecture for much faster execution of each instruction. With Advantech RISC SBCs, designers can achieve RISC system-level designs easily with less than 7W of total system power consumption for a RISC-based 5" or 7” panel PC. Reduced SBC size allows easy integration and implementation into customer designs, the company explained.

Advantech maintained that the RISC computing solutions are also guaranteed long product life-cycle–up to 7 years. With a life-cycle as long as this, the customers will not have to go for too frequent upgrades. This will help the users to save on their maintenance budget.

The PCM-C3500product line-up supports Windows Embedded CE 6.0, Embedded Linux2.6 and Android (News - Alert) (on a project-by-project basis).

Being supported by Advantech’s SUSIAccess, a set of software APIs, PCM-C3500 Series will be able to reduce project development effort, enhance hardware platform reliability, and shorten time to market.

Another advantage with SUSIAccess, according to Advantech, is that it also provides an easy upgrade path as functions are continuously added and improved.

The product line comes complete with off-the-shelf evaluation kit, intended to provide a complete design environment with full technical documentation.

The PCM-C3500 series was officially launched on the market in July. In the release, Advantech revealed its plans about showcasing the PCM-C3500 series in upcoming tradeshows such as the Institute for Infocomm Research Infocomm & Media, IOT Seminar 2011, Singapore and EDN Asia Embedded Seminar 2011, Singapore.

In a recent press release, Advantech announced that it is also going to showcase its Intel-based solutions ranging from Intel Core i7 processor AMCs to 40G AdvancedTCA (News - Alert) Systems with dual Intel Xeon pprocessor blades at the upcoming Intel Developer Forum 2011 (IDF) in San Francisco. Also featured will be Advantech DPDK-enabled 40G Network Servers.
