A leading European collocation and data center service provider, Interxion (News - Alert) Holding, recently reported an important milestone in its green agenda. The company that provides carrier neutral, colocation services through its 28 data centers in 11 countries across Europe, announced that its London data center has signed an agreement with SmartestEnergy for 100 percent renewable energy. The agreement will enable Interxion to dramatically reduce the said data center’s carbon footprint and become the latest of Interxion’s data centers to convert to 100 percent renewable energy.
SmartestEnergy is not just one of the UK’s utility companies. The company’s uniqueness lies in the fact that it purchases electricity from independent generators that source power from renewable energy sources including wind, hydro and biomass, in addition to Good Quality CHP (Combined Heat and Power).
In a press release, Interxion said that transparency remained a key factor in the selection of SmartestEnergy, as it claims to provide a clear audit trail and also records relevant renewable energy certificates for Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGO).
Interxion is currently pursuing an ambitious, ongoing sustainability program. According to Interxion, it already has company-wide measures in place, including a monthly overview of energy-efficiency in all countries, non-negotiable energy efficient components in design engineering requirements, energy metering and energy efficiency measurements available to customers and closed-loop energy and natural cooling wherever practical.
“We are passionate about making our extensive European network of data centers as sustainable as possible, and the changes to our UK energy supply simply reinforce our commitment to the green agenda. We take energy efficiency very seriously and recognize that our customers also do, and we aim to stay ahead of the game when it comes to ongoing political discussions around the reduction of CO2 emissions – working with groups like the Green Grid and the Uptime Institute to set clear standards and best practice within the industry.” Managing Director UK at Interxion Greg McCulloch noted in a statement.
Recently, Interxion announced its results for the three months ended 30 June 2011.
The company reported 19 percent increase in the revenues.
