Environmental Organizations Win the .eco Domain Name

As environmentalists continue to sound the alarm of the deteriorating conditions of the planet, governments are dragging their feet to act on policies to slow down or even stop many of the practices human beings carryout throughout the planet for causing so much of the damage. The UN climate change summit held last month in New York had many pledges to do the right thing by all the participants, as well as the mandatory blame game of rapidly developing countries such as China and India. The disagreement between the countries highlights the problem environmental organizations face when they try to recommend policy changes. One way of accomplishing this is by having access to a platform that allows their message to be delivered without influence, and a coalition of more than 50 environmental groups have succeeded in that front by preventing private companies from using the .eco Internet domain name.

The Guardian reported a group assembled by a Canadian company consisting of more than 50 environmental organizations, including WWF and 350.org won out over three other groups competing for .eco. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann) granted the coalition control of the domain name, which will go a long way in ensuring only organizations with true environmental credentials will have access to this address.

According to the report, the groups that lost the ruling will be appealing the decision by Icann, but the company that organized this effort sees it as a great victory for environmentalists. Jacob Malthouse, co-founder of Big Room Inc, told the newspaper, “This means the environmental groups will always be in control of dot eco domain names. It means that the dot eco domain is going to be run by and for environmentalists. When people see a dot eco domain name they can be sure that is actually going to be meaningful.”

Once the processes is over organizations will start establishing the criteria that will determine what constitutes an .eco status, which will likely bring more infighting amongst the many organizations looking to use this domain name.

Malthouse said the .eco domain name is like waterfront real estate in an earlier report by the Guardian, and it was essential to keep it under true environmentalists so corporations would not use it for industry greenwashing to make the products and services they offer more palatable to consumers that are looking for environmentally friendly solutions.
