Harley Introduces Its First Electric Motorcycle: Project LiveWire

Coming as a shock to all, Harley-Davidson, arguably the world’s most popular motorcycle provider, recently unveiled its most recent project—and it was nothing the audience expected. The company revealed Project LiveWire, its first electric motorcycle designed to go from zero to 60 mph in four seconds.

With an electronically restricted top speed of 92 mph, the prototype is powered by a longitudinally-mounted electric motor, and was partially developed with help from Mission Motors, an electric powertrain specialist.

The bike is not available for sale at this time, however, and the exact date of its availability to the public is unknown. Instead, the company has decided to launch the prototype on a 30-city tour across the U.S. to different Harley-Davidson dealership locations. Here, customers can test ride the bike and offer feedback to the company. The tour will begin in New York on June 24, before heading to Boston, Philadelphia, and other major U.S. cities. The company hopes to bring the prototype to more U.S. cities, as well as Canada and Europe, sometime next year.

If you are just as intrigued as we are about this new electric motorcycle concept, check out Harley-Davidson’s teaser of the bike released this week, where footage shows the evolution of the Harley-Davidson bike from the first make all the way up to the battery-powered prototype. Ending with the new electric motorcycle cruising down Route 66, the company reveals an evolution of their motorcycles that seems like it was meant to be. However, only customers can decide if Project LiveWire is the next big thing meant for the motorcycle market.

Harley-Davidson promises that this will be “a new sound, but the same feeling.” Hopefully that feeling hasn’t left along with the V-twin engine.
