Frost & Sullivan: Building Automation Systems to Gain Traction

The building automation systems market in Europe appears to be on a roll. News analysis from Frost & Sullivan (News - Alert) confirms this trend and states that the market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 3.5 percent until 2018.

Many factors are responsible for providing an impetus to this market. With building being the chief consumers of energy in that region, the need for energy efficiency is on the rise. Building automation systems (BAS) can monitor energy patterns and drive improved energy efficiency in new and existing buildings. And, in order to make buildings secure, safe and comfortable, monitoring, security and lighting are important. These tasks are well accomplished with BAS.

Thus Krishna Raman, research analyst of process and control at Frost and Sullivan noted that wireless control devices are gaining traction across Europe as they enable end users to easily reach remote and previously inaccessible parts of buildings as well as boost safety in hazardous industrial environments.

“BAS that are integrated with building analytics are also becoming popular especially in the education and public sector due to the ability of these solutions to track and predict energy consumption patterns, pinpoint defective modules, and measure compliance to building efficiency standards," stated Raman.

Also by acquiring smart metering abilities, vendors are integrating buildings with smart grids. By integrating BAS with control systems, they hope to create buildings that are not only energy efficient but can also enhance water and waste management efficiency.

With many vendors turning to cloud services, IT tasks and processes are being automated in order to increase efficiency and save time on routine tasks. Also by using BSA, they can reduce cost of service maintenance, help companies become more agile and achieve a rapid ROI (return on investment).

Although BAS has so many applications, there appears to be a distinct lack of awareness among some end users on the advantages of investing in it. Manufacturers should hence offer consulting services to increase customer satisfaction and revenues. Needless to say, they must expand their competencies by strengthening their offerings through acquisitions and mergers so that they can retain their customers in the European building automation markets.
