US Virgin Islands Deploy Advanced Metering Infrastructure from Itron, Tantalus

Itron Inc., a provider of solutions for the resourceful use of energy and water, stated that along with Tantalus, a provider of real-time smart grid communications, it is going to equip U.S. Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority (VIWAPA) with an advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) communications network.

VIWAPA supposedly conducted a thorough technology review and found that the joint solution offered by Itron and Tantalus enabled it to affordably make use of its existing infrastructure, including fiber and microwave backhaul technology, over extremely rugged terrain. The joint solution was then selected for its AMI network and smart metering deployment that will cover more than 55,000 VIWAPA's electric customers throughout the islands of Saint Croix, Saint John, and Saint Thomas. The deployment will also make use of Itron advanced meters.

"We are pleased to continue our work with our customer, VIWAPA, as they modernize their electricity infrastructure and transition to advanced metering,” said Lou Gust, Itron's vice president of sales and marketing for electricity in North America. “In collaboration with Tantalus, we are helping VIWAPA more efficiently manage the delivery of electricity to its customers across multiple islands."

Itron explained that one can deploy its AMI network solutions to collect, deliver, manage and analyze data more frequently in order to retrieve a detailed insight about their infrastructure which in turn will help them streamline their operations and employ a more proactive management of customers and resources.

Tantalus asserted that it offers TUNet, a rapid and reliable RF mesh network that enables electric, water and gas distributors to automate processes, improve business operations and deliver top-tier customer service. VIWAPA will utilize the newly released TUNet-enabled CENTRON II electric meters for their deployment.

Mike Julian, vice president of sales at Tantalus, added, "VIWAPA’s initiatives to improve its telecommunications and smart grid landscape while faced with non-traditional deployment challenges is admirable. The Itron-Tantalus solution is perfectly suited to meet the formidable challenge of uniting AMI communications over three separate islands and providing an unmatched suite of cost-saving energy efficiency applications for both the utility and the consumer."
