Cree Releases an Energy Efficient 100-watt LED Replacement Bulb

For those that wish to save money and truly brighten up a room, Cree (News - Alert), a leading developer of light bulbs, has just released a 100-watt LED replacement bulb. Since March of 2013, Cree has been offering LED light bulbs to the consumer market, and has over the last year has been powering those lightbulbs up, with the 100-watt replacement bulb being the newest. This light bulb is reported to produce 1,600 lumens at an energy cost of 18 watts, and it can get pretty bright.

Many people are still using incandescent or fluorescent light bulbs, unaware of the positive shift toward LED light bulbs for consumers. While Cree’s 100-watt LED replacement bulb may seem steeply priced at $19.97, these bulbs can save consumers a lot of money in the long run. LEDs are much more durable than either incandescent or fluorescent. LED have been reported to last up to 25,000 hours, while incandescents and fluorescents last 1,200 and 8,000 respectively. An LED light could last for years without having to invest in another, saving consumers money. The energy output of these lights is also much smaller, and using an LED light can save a consumer hundreds in energy bills.

LED lights also have the advantage of being easier on the environment, with lower carbon dioxide emissions and the lower energy prices. The government awards companies that are able to lower the environmental impact of their products with Energy Star Certification. At the moment, Cree’s light bulbs have not yet received this certification, however it is believed that they will after a 3 month process. Cree’s competitor, Philips (News - Alert), has received Energy Star Certification for their similar product. This means that in states where rebates are given for using Energy Star Certified products, the Philips light bulb will likely remain a cheaper and better option, however elsewhere, in places that do not offer rebates, Cree’s LED light bulb replacements are cheaper.

Cheaper doesn’t mean lower quality, Cree’s new product is only 80 lumens lower than Philips, but is also 1 watt less in energy cost. Both are considered omni-directional, meaning the light goes in all directions, and are able to be used with dimmers. Perhaps the kicker though, for Cree, is that it is backed by a 10-year warranty.
