Eos Energy Storage recently selected Ideal Power’s 30kW battery converter technology to be integrated with its Aurora energy storage system, which is set to be connected to the grid and deployed by Con Edison in a New York City pilot project in the second quarter of 2014.

The company has “successfully tested Ideal Power's 30kW battery converter with our Aurora system to demonstrate bi-directional AC power flow and have been very pleased with the results,” said Michael Oster, CEO at Eos Energy Storage, adding that based on this performance, “Eos has selected Ideal Power for the multi-kW scale distributed energy storage system to be installed at a Con Edison site.”

The Aurora system is equipped with Eos’s zinc hybrid cathode (Znyth) battery technology, which employs widely available materials within a robust, scalable design to achieve long-life and low-cost.

With the Aurora system, which has been designed to enhance renewable energy generation, there is an increase in grid’s efficiency and resiliency, while the utilities’ costs and consumers' electricity bills see a marked reduction, according to company officials.

Additionally, the Aurora system may be scaled and configured to maximize profitability in utility, commercial and industrial, and residential market segments.

Dan Brdar, chairman and CEO at Ideal Power, sees his company’s partnership with Eos and its involvement in the pilot project with Con Ed as an opportunity to demonstrate its complementary technologies and to create a best-in-class AC-integrated energy storage system.

Ideal Power's 30kW battery converter is based on the company's patented Power Packet Switching Architecture (PPSA), which provides electrical isolation by eliminating the use of a bulky and expensive transformer.

Company officials said that this battery converter offers high efficiency in a compact, modular and easy-to-install product, which can improve the economics for energy storage applications.

Recently, Smarter Grid Solutions announced that it will be working with Con Edison to increase the resiliency of its electrical grid during weather-related power outages.
