Green Technology Week in Review

As the saying goes, “no good deed goes unpunished.” Every little bit of help counts, and this can be applied to this week’s news in green technology. Great strides can be made on a personal, as well as a global, scale when it comes to green technology, and every little bit of energy saving each does can combine to make a big difference within the environment.

On a global scale this week, Romolo V. Nati, an Italian architect, expressed a desire to utilize green technology in order to rebuild Leyte and other parts of Eastern Visayas due to the devastation caused by Super Typhoon Yolanda. If given the okay, Italpinas Euroasian Design and Eco-Development Corp. (ITPI) will work alongside Constellation Energy Corp. (CEC) in building sustainable buildings using green technology. ITPI’s plan also includes proper flood zoning (in the case of another similar emergency), focusing on building homes and buildings on higher ground (50 to 100 meters above sea level). Storm walls and drainage channels are a few other components of the ITPI’s plan.

Indeed, going green has definitely gone global, and consumers are taking note of its benefits across the world. The people of Malaysia are looking towards cutting their electricity usage due to a sudden power tariff increase of 15.89 percent. Malaysian housewife Roanna Wong stated, “Even though the cost of electricity is rising, we have to learn and adapt to the situation. A lot of energy-saving techniques like reducing the use of air-conditioners only require a little discipline and sacrifice,” revealing the willingness for consumers to cut back on energy costs for economic reasons, ultimately benefiting the environment.

The use of more energy-efficient products can really go the extra mile when going green, and no better example of this is commuting. A new bicycle wheel has been released that assists riders when climbing hills through stored energy. This crazy cool wheel is called the Copenhagen Wheel, and it is designed to replace the rear wheel of your bike. The bike pedals and operates the same as always – yet it includes an orange plastic hub which contains a motor, sensors, a lithium battery and wireless communication software. Once the rider reaches a speed of 5km/hr the motor begins to help the rider, and the battery is regenerated from brake heat and downhill riding. Saving your own energy as well as the environment? Seems like a fair deal.

Starting your journey to become more ‘green’ may seem overwhelming, yet there are five simple steps you can take to be on your way to saving the environment. Solar-powered appliances, getting an automated home system to control temperature or lighting etc., or investing in LED light bulbs are a few tips to get you started. Whether it is an individual or an entire country wishing to make a change and invest in green technology, this week goes to show that every little bit counts.
