Recently, Facebook and Microsoft (News - Alert) turned to renewable energy sources and made commitments to power data centers with the wind. Now, Virtus Data Centers (Virtus) is opting to use energy from generated from fully renewable sources for its LON1 data center facility, and to that end has signed a new power contract with E.ON (News - Alert).

“I am delighted that Virtus will now be providing customers with 100 per cent renewable energy,” said Neil Cresswell, CEO at Virtus Data Centers.

As part of the renewable energy program, E.ON will be supplying Virtus with energy from within its portfolio of renewable sources, including on and off shore wind farms, biomass power stations and wave energy projects.

Virtus, the power and connectivity behind many of London's businesses, represents excellent value for its tenants, and the move to make its London data center reinforces Virtus' commitment towards providing sustainable and environmentally efficient solutions.

By opting for a low CO2 source, Virtus is seeking to increase the energy efficiency of its already highly energy efficient LON1 data center, which deploys ‘intelligent’ chillers, ultra efficient UPS and other power saving technologies.

"Combined with our Eco-Engineering principles, the new contract further enhances the environmental credentials of our LON1 data center,” said Cresswell.

As a result of the E.ON contract, all colocation customers within the Virtus LON1 facility will benefit from ‘green' energy and will be exempted from paying the Climate Change Levy (CCL (News - Alert)), which is an energy tax that encourages business users to become more energy efficient and to reduce their carbon dioxide emissions.

By owning and designing its own data centers, Virtus has maintained an emphasis on high power density and environmentally friendly cooling technology that maximizes efficiency and minimizes environmental impact.

In an era, where everything has become competitive, many data centers are coming up with innovative approaches to increase data center efficiency, and the good thing that has come out of this that companies are reducing the carbon footprint in their data centers.

While this is tremendously good for the environment, it is also good for the companies that implement 'the green energy concept' in their data centers and also their customers who seek low costs but high quality.
