The GreenTech Malaysia building located in Bandar Baru Bangi, is a shining example of green technology. The rooms are lit with reflective light from the sun. Despite its lack of air conditioning the rooms are the perfect temperature. The building uses a green technology known as slab cooling. The building’s floors are cooled with chilled water.

The building, constructed in 2006, has certainly controlled its environmental footprint. It has consumed little fossil fuel. It sports a energy index of 30 kilowatt hours per square metre per year. A normal building of its size would consume an energy index of 250 to 300 kWh/m2 per year.

GreenTech Malaysia is driving the nation’s green agenda. It’s goal is to make it’s country a green technology leader. Right now Malaysia is the second largest country in the world for solar products. It’s solar products have brought in direct foreign investments of more than RM12 million. Solar projects have created 10,000 new jobs.

GreenTech has a strong green technology awareness program. It holds public engagements, events and exhibitions such as the International Greentech & Eco Products Exhibition & Conference Malaysia. It also holds events at schools and universities and carnivals.

GreenTech Malaysia CEO Ahmad Hadri Haris says that awareness is just one part of making green technology grow the other part is skilled workers.

“We conduct training for skilled workers and professionals such as degree holders. We also conduct programs in training schools and universities. This year we’re appointed by Human Resource Ministry to develop National Occupational Skill Standard on green technology,” Haris said.

Market development is also crucial, “Green tech needs a market for the products. We create green township, green procurement, green label, certification — in this context we coordinate market development for green products with entities like Sirim and the Energy Commission,” he added.

Malaysia is the only country in the world that has a Ministry completely dedicated to green technology. Through awareness, training, market development and leaders support the environmental movement in Malaysia has a green light.
