Green Technology Week in Review

Reducing one’s carbon footprint and aiding in saving the planet are continuous topics in the realm of green technology. This week, we are not only reminded of the negative impact of global warming, but the positive impact of going green on the economy on a local as well as global scale – further pushing us to really consider carpooling or looking into financing a smart home of our own. Global warming could possibly be the greatest environmental problem our society faces. This is why many government officials are encouraging countries to take a stand – a step in the direction of reducing our carbon footprint.

A recent report compiled from the researchers of the Global Carbon Project reveals that more than 39 billion tons of carbon dioxide was released this year alone, a disturbing 2.1 percent increase since 2011. In a nutshell, the amount of carbon dioxide being released in the atmosphere from burning fossil fuels is way more than plants can absorb, and therefore the carbon dioxide remains in the air, causing the global temperature to increase. The global temperature increase is causing radical climate changes throughout the world, which can cause violent, life threatening storms. Government officials are encouraging countries to utilize more renewable sources of energy such as solar, wind and water power as well as reducing the burning of fossil fuels.

The latest news in green technology this week reveals that going green is a movement being seen on a local and global scale, for more reasons than one. Last Friday, South Africa’s Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies gave a speech at the Living Plant Conference, revealing that South Africa wishes to jump on the green tech train and become a manufacturer of green technology. South Africa has even created an Integrated Resource Plan that plans on obtaining most of the country’s energy from renewable energy resources by the year 2030. Not only does South Africa see renewable resources as beneficial to the environment but the country’s economy as well, for moving into manufacturing green technology could provide jobs for the people of the country.

Green technology is being utilized on a more local scale as well, for Roanoke, Virginia’s Masons Cove Elementary – post reconstruction since 2011 – features a solar-powered hot water tank, geothermal heating and cooling systems as well as natural lighting and a water filtration system. Superintendent of Schools Lorraine Lange stresses the positive effect going green has had on the environment as well as the budget. “We’ve been incorporating green initiatives for several years and they’re already paying off. We’ve seen significant energy savings at several schools,” Lange stated.

This week has made it quite clear the creating “smart buildings” and using renewable sources to obtain energy have become beneficial to the environment as well as the economy of countries around the world. By decreasing the consumption of expensive sources of energy, companies can improve the “triple bottom line,” or people, planet and profile. According to Dan Probst, chairman of energy and sustainability services at Jones Lang LaSalle, “upon installation, automated building systems generate profound reductions in a building’s energy consumption because the carbon footprint of the building and its city literally shrinks with every equipment data sensor.” With everyone doing their part and going green – whether it is a community or an entire country – all will be benefited within our society.
