Elementary School in Roanoke, Virginia Recognized for its Green Tech

Not so long ago, Roanoke, Va.’s Masons Cove Elementary, was one of Roanoke County's last coal-fired schools. Now it is being recognized as one of the most energy-efficient schools in the state.

The original school was built in 1961, but it was torn down in 2011. When the new school opened it showcased a state-of-the-art solar-powered hot water tank, geothermal heating and cooling systems, natural lighting and a water filtration system. The school parking lot was created with pavement that drastically reduces storm water runoff.

For its efforts in reducing its carbon footprint Mason Cove Elementary was recently awarded the Gold LEED Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. It is the only public school west of Charlottesville to earn this certificate. The two-year-old school is one of only 10 in the state of Virginia to be Gold LEED certified.

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is the most recognized green building certification in the United States. LEED is a rating system for the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of green buildings, homes and neighborhoods. Its purpose is to aid owners and operators in finding ways to become more environmentally efficient and responsible.

Superintendent of Schools Lorraine Lange said, "Having green technology in our schools is not only good for the environment, it's also good for our budget. We've been incorporating green initiatives for several years and they're already paying off. We've seen significant energy savings at several schools that now use geothermal heating and cooling."

Mason Cove Elementary cost approximately $13 million to build. It opened to students for the 2011 school year and was designed by RRMM Architects.

The Gold LEED certification was unveiled at the school’s PTA meeting, which was held on   Tuesday, Nov. 19.
