Vehicle Tracking Helps Small Fleets Save Money, Reduce Environmental Impact

The expanding use of vehicle tracking systems are giving more companies a chance to save money and become environmentally sustainable by providing enlightening information about their fleet operations. The relatively inexpensive technology, long used by large fleet operations like Fedex and UPS, particularly holds promise to make an impact in small to medium sized fleets.

Such was the case with STE Waste of Manchester, United Kingdom, which recently fitted its fleet of seven vehicles with tracking systems from Navman Wireless. In the first week of operation with the devices, the company reported each vehicle traveled an average of 20 miles less.

While that seems like a small distance, it adds up over time. “Having visibility of the fleet in seconds has enabled us to better route our fleet,” said Marcus Farmer, STE Waste’s managing director. “And when you consider that every mile saved puts 1.50 back on the bottom line, you begin to understand why vehicle tracking can be such an effective business tool.”

Farmer is a believer in tracking technology, calling it an “enabler” of “sensible ways of working” that result in less cost to the business and less cost to the environment.

Vehicle tracking systems, like the one used by STE Waste, typically use GPS or GLONASS technology in individual vehicles, then combine that information with fleet software that can develop an overview of vehicle operations. Then company personnel can view that information and determine methods for minimizing routes and reducing costs.

Farmer says reducing carbon dioxide emissions is a top priority for STE Waste, to the point where even the initials in the company’s name stand for Save the Environment.

“In this climate, where the cost of running a vehicle is exceptionally high, green is about getting vehicle miles down,” he said. “This is what being sustainable means to small, medium size fleets. Reducing unnecessary waste can trim operating costs for a business and decrease mileage, saving both time and money.”
