Green Technology Week in Review

Going green doesn’t just involve the consumer buying eco-friendly products anymore. Businesses are trying to lend a helping hand to the environment either by introducing more environmentally-friendly products or services.

Green technology has been prevalent this week in major news among global businesses and corporations, such as Virgin Train, which has partnered up with CM Group to develop e-learning courses in order to make strides to improve the environment as well as its performance as an organization. This will cut down on employee and company travel, and the courses will even cover topics such as environmental policy and legislation related to their business.

Natural disasters may cause an increased awareness towards going green and protecting the environment, and this week Japan is promoting the use of the renewable energy to combat power supply issues due to the Great East Japan Earthquake in March of 2011. Japan aims for a low in carbon society, and their execution of the FIT program may aid in their goal of building a greener society.

Western Digital (News - Alert) is also trying to combat high levels of power usage this week by creating a new drive that is based on helium. These helium disks are expected to reduce power consumption and increase storage capacity, which may help to combat the large amounts of power usage by data centers.

Solar and wind energy prospects have always been spoken of in terms of creating cleaner, more efficient energy within our society. This week London-based Virtus Data Centres Ltd. Announced its plans to develop the first data center in London to launch energy efficient technology. LONDON2 is anticipated to use solar panels as well as well groundwater in an effort to further protect the environment.

The idea of going green and combating global warming has become such a hot topic (get it?) that scientists are even considering the renewed use of nuclear power as a solution to global warming. Sounds kind of sci-fi and creepy, right? Some scientists, such as James Hansen of NASA who introduced global warming to the public in 1988 in front of Congress, beg to differ. Some scientists claim that the rising temperature of the planet and rising carbon dioxide emissions call for a new course of action. This week has definitely been a proactive time in the strides of green technology, for there is no better time than now to save the world.
