Virgin Trains: Saving Money and the Environment

By Kathleen Delaney

Virgin Trains is taking the lead in sustainability by choosing to roll out e-learning on sustainability to all its employees. Virgin Trains has selected CM Group to develop e-learning courses to improve the environmental performance of its organization. Sustainability courses are generally intended for civil servants, engineers, faculty, students and others involved in green project planning, design or construction.

Course Content

These courses start with an introduction to the rationale and principles of the green economy. Sustainability courses often outline national planning groups and organizations that set sustainability standards. E-learning courses will cover topics like environmental policy and legislation related to their business. Sustainability courses generally describe how sustainability is linked to overall business strategies and goals.

Environmental Benefits of eLearning Courses

Employees will no longer have to travel to take courses, and the company will not have to send educators to various worksites to give presentations. Employees can even choose to take the courses from home in order to avoid having to sit in rush hour traffic to attend class. These courses teach employees about sustainability goals and metrics, increasing compliance with sustainability practices, and better data collection with regard to sustainability.

Environmental and Business Benefits of the CM Group’s Solution

E-learning courses will cover the benefits of sustainability and overviews of successful green projects, which may give Virgin Train employees ideas to make Virgin more eco-friendly.  Employees will learn about sustainability standards and industrial regulations, potentially allowing Virgin Trains to rely on in-house staff instead of consultants to fill out the paperwork for sustainability standards like ISO 14000.  Employees will gain ideas from sustainability training that lead to lean engineering projects or waste reduction. Using less material reduces procurement costs, while generating less waste lowers disposal costs. These savings can add up quickly, leading to a radical ROI on the cost of an e-learning program.
