Green Technology Week in Review

By Steve Anderson
Contributing TMCnet Writer

It's been a very big week indeed for green technology, and that means the technology that not only helps improve the lives of everyday people yet also improves the planet had plenty of new entries into the wider field this week. With the weekend now ahead of us, that gives us a good opportunity to catch our collective breath—the air for same made just a bit cleaner by the technology in question—settle in, and consider the biggest events to arrive with our Week in Review coverage!

First, word emerged about a new partnership between 3M (News - Alert) and SunPartner Technologies, who got together to create a new kind of solar charging system that brings together 3M's Optically Clear Adhesives with SunPartner Technologies' new Wysips Crystal transparent solar cell system. The combination is set to allow for devices that can charge while in use, and while exposed to light of any type, be it natural or artificial, essentially turning any flat surface into a full-on solar panel.

Next, the Trelleborg Group had a major coup, winning the contract to cable up the Fukushima Wind Farm project. Located just 16 kilometers (just short of 10 miles) from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, which recently experienced a series of disasters, the wind farm in question is set to represent a major change in the way Japan produces and uses electrical power from nuclear to wind and similar renewables. The Trelleborg Group, meanwhile, has provided several other components from bend stiffeners and bend restrictors to distributed buoyancy modules and more.

An oddly contradictory report came in next as the “Green Car Journal” announced finalists for the Green Car of the Year award, and not a one of said finalists was a strictly electric car. While several models were announced as finalists—the Mazda3, the Audi A6 TDI (News - Alert), and others—all of said models involved some form of fuel, including several gasoline models. As it turns out, the “Green Car Journal” uses availability as one of its main selection criteria, and for many people, viable electric-only vehicles are simply unavailable to most users.

Then we had a closer look at the shipping industry, and what it was doing to reduce its carbon emissions and help shore up the environment. The rise of online shopping has meant a lot more transporting of goods going on, and several organizations are out to kick in a little help to dial down the amount of carbon going up into the atmosphere. Some methods in line to help include the use of waste-heat recovery systems to power generators and the use of scrubbers and the like to reduce carbon emissions, a program which has already seen some impressive results.

Finally we had a look at Volvo's new line of nano battery technology, which was sufficiently powerful to be brought into play on vehicles. The concept in mind requires a mix of carbon fiber, improved capacitors, and nano structuring to produce a smaller, lighter battery. Battery technology is easily one of the biggest hurdles to both electric vehicles and home-based electrical generation, so seeing a new kind of more powerful, more cost-effective technology may prove helpful in spurring adoption.

That was the week that was in green technology, and there was plenty of news to be had this week. Our global online community was in fine form, bringing in all the latest in news from around the globe, so be sure to join us back here next week for all the latest news in green technology, and every weekend for our Week in Review coverage!
