The Green Car Awards are Fueled by Fuel

Well, you can't win 'em all. Or, in the case of the pure electric cars: any. Not when it comes to these awards, at least.

The Green Car Journal has announced its finalists for its Green Car of the Year award, and it was lights out for the strictly electric rides. CNET reports that the five in line for the win are The Mazda3; the Audi A6 TDI (News - Alert); the BMW 328d; the Honda Accord; and the Toyota Corolla. If you're wondering about some of these choices we don't blame you. Diesel is alright, but how is it that something that uses gasoline is up for a prize with the word "green" attached? And in lieu of an electric vehicle, to boot?

Consider this caveat: part of Green Car Journal's awards criteria is availability, which is based on the idea that cars like the Toyota Corolla do less damage than other cars, and should be driven by more people. It's not so much that these cars are the leaders of the pack in environmental efficiency; it's that they run a high fuel economy and are budget-friendly.

The Audi A6 and the BMW 328d, both diesel-powered, are more realistic contenders when considering the actual environment. They leverage a technology that has made strong advancements in emitting cleaner emissions. These cars are also becoming more widely used and have generally improved in the category of drivability, which is pretty important when considering the automobile.

The Honda (News - Alert) Accord has a place in the final running because of it represents a new direct injection engine and is a hybrid variant.

But why no electric car, not even one for good measure? Because they're still too rare, still too posh, and only hotsy-totsy towns like New York and some along the West Coast even offer them. How can they fill the roads with their pure absence of vapors if they're still such a reserved luxury? Time to step on the gas pedal, electric-car manufacturers! Get your products to market and get them to a price point with which the vast blue collar segment can negotiate.

CNET predicts that the Mazda3 and Toyota Corolla will be close runners up given their affordability and conservation of gasoline.
